The Heritage Foundation
October 1, 2008

How is Panama weathering the economic storm facing the rest of the world? Apparently pretty well according to this recent survey of countries in around the world and in this region. There have been a number of articles coming out this week trying to calm fears people may have about Panama during these difficult times.

Panama ranked 32nd out of 52 countries that were surveyed as part of the first Financial Development Index prepared by the World Economic Forum.

The survey ranked countries based on 140 areas, which included facets of each country's political, social and economic systems.

There were eight countries in this region included in the survey. Panama was second in the region, trailing only Chile, which ranked 30th overall.

Brazil (43), Mexico (44), Colombia (46), Peru (47), Argentina (48) and Venezuela (52) were the other countries from the region included.

The survey judged each country on factors such as the strength of its banking system, its business environment and its financial stability.

Panama ranked highly in several areas due to “a steady performance in key indicators,” the survey stated.

The secretary general of the Superintendencia de Bancos, Amauri Castillo, said that Panama's ranking was “more than satisfactory.”

“The stability, strength and liquidity of the financial system has helped the country weather the current international crisis,” Castillo said, adding that there is also a great deal of confidence in the system because of regulatory policies and supervision.

Cruise destination spotlight: Panama Canal

Cruising the Panama Canal is a once-in-a-lifetime experience reserved for only the most determined travelers. While anyone is allowed to go, 14-night itineraries and pricey one-way airfares have a way of weeding out many potential cruisers. Retirees with a lot of money and time to spare make up the largest part of this cruise audience.

The Panama Canal's cruise season runs from late September through April. The best time to visit Panama is in the winter and spring, especially since the country's rainy season lasts from March through December. For the best weather, cruise after November.

Howard airport betting on charter flights

The development of the former Howard Air Force base is continuing as the facility is being readied to handle an increase in charter flights.

Howard is currently a category 7 airport which acts as a complement to commercial aviation. The Boeing 747 that was used by the James Bond movie film crew was there.
The facility received 12 charter flights from the U.S. and Canada over the past year.

By 2009, the developers hope that the airport can start receiving charter flights on a regular basis.

This is expected to help resorts located on the country's Pacific Coast, such as Playa Bonita, Playa Blanca and Decameron. The opening of Howard will significantly reduce the amount of time it takes guests to reach those resorts, who must now land at Tocumen International Airport.
